Air quality appliances that look alike on paper can perform very differently at home. Here is exactly what we look at before recommending one.
What We Look At
- Room coverage: CADR ratings and the room size a unit can realistically handle at a comfortable fan speed
- Filtration: True HEPA versus HEPA-type filters, activated carbon for odors and smoke, and sealed designs
- Noise: published decibel levels on low and high settings, and whether there is a quiet sleep mode
- Capacity and drainage (dehumidifiers): pints per day, tank size, continuous drain hose, and pump options
- Mist type and cleaning (humidifiers): cool versus warm mist, tank size, run time, and how easy it is to clean
- Energy use: wattage and ENERGY STAR certification where available
- True ownership cost: price plus replacement filters, wicks, and other consumables
Where Our Information Comes From
We evaluate manufacturer-published specifications, independent certifications, official product data from Amazon’s catalog, and patterns across verified customer ratings and reviews. We do not invent specifications, test results, or hands-on claims. Where we describe real-world performance, it reflects the consensus of verified owner reviews, not independent lab testing.
